About South Melbourne

There’s no better place to live, work or visit than South Melbourne, with its diverse and vibrant inner-city community. Our popular cafes, shops, market, parks and nearby beaches compete with the best in the world.  Here’s a few of the many reasons why the South Melbourne ward is so great:

Community

South Melbourne has a diverse community with a median age of 38 years. Approximately 40% live alone, 16% are families with children and 30% of residents are born overseas.

Collaboration

11,000+ residents will be voting via a postal vote this October. It’s important that we come together to work on making South Melbourne’s future bright. Take the time to share your perspective with me.

Growth & Amenity

With 20-25% growth expected getting amenity right is critical. We must make the right decisions now and invest wisely so South Melbourne continues to be a great place to live, work and play!

heart

Compassionate

So many community groups are going out of their way to build a local community that cares – the Pantry at Park Towers, the Men’s Shed and ReadySet to name a few!

business

Local Businesses

It’s important that we have the right projects in place to support local businesses and that the infrastructure helps our domestic and international customers get to and from South Melbourne.

train

ANZAC Station

The new station will significantly improve access to and from South Melbourne. It’s been placed to ease pressure on the St Kilda Road/Swanston Street tram corridor, which is the busiest tram corridor in the world!  Click here.

Rich Heritage & History

Many residents have been living in the area for 20 or 30+ years. I love hearing the stories of what South Melbourne used to be like. It’s important that we preserve our history while evolving to embrace the future too.

South Melbourne Beach

We’re lucky to have South Melbourne beach and the Bay nearby, even if it doesn’t fall within our ward we must care about it’s water quality. Port Phillip is the entrance to Australia’s busiest port and is one of Victoria’s most popular recreational destinations.

Open Spaces

South Melbourne ward has many wonderful open spaces like St Vincent’s Garden and Eastern Reserve. We’re also lucky to have Albert Park lake, Lagoon Reserve and Gasworks nearby. We must protect and develop our open spaces making them enjoyable for use.

South Melbourne Market

The South Melbourne Market is the number 1 market in Victoria on Tripadvisor. Established in 1867, it’s the oldest continually running market in Melbourne and has over 150 stalls. It’s open every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8am. Click here.

Council elections wards

Port Phillip is moving to single member wards in the upcoming election. This means one Counscillor will be elected to represent South Melbourne. Did you know the new South Melbourne ward is different to the South Melbourne postcode and also the area described in the South Melbourne structure plan?

Wander around South Melbourne

I find the best way to explore South Melbourne is to walk around it’s streets and speak with people I encounter. Here’s a video of someone doing that you can watch online!
